Verbatim of the Day
“I thought a second. Then suddenly I was speaking from the frenzied center of everything that had gripped me in the last week.
‘I want the advantage,’ I said. ‘I want the competitive advantage. I don’t give a damn about anybody else. I want to do better than them.’
My tone was ugly, (…)”
- One L by Scott Turow
Words of the Day
“He is getting some recognition out of those in the know.”
- “In the know,” probably the only use of know as a noun, means being aware of something known only to a few people. [The New Oxford American Dictionary]
Verbatim of the day
“You’re not in Kansas anymore.”
Quoted from “Wizard of Oz.” It tells you about what you are dealing with or where you are right now. Even if you expect things to go in a way that you are used to, they are not going to.

“I’m so tired of being competent,” he said suddenly. “I’ve been competent all my life. I wish I could be either the best or the worst. This is just so goddamn dull.”

Why Do Lawyers Use Long Sentences?
“…, statutes and regulations grind on, line after line, perhaps on the theory that if the readers come to a period they will rush out to violate the law without bothering to read to the end.”
A Time to Kill! (Just Finished)
Finally finished reading it. It took a little longer than I expected. I had to spend most of my time at work. But I definitely enjoyed my time on way to work and home.
It is indeed such a great work. I enjoyed it so much as I did when I read “The Firm.” I realize that my favorite quality of Mr. Grisham’s novels is the main character. The ego of the lawyer that never holds back even on the verge of total failure in their lives. I like that confident, condescending, sometimes arrogant attitude of Jake Brigance. Maybe it is because I am not personally like that but I secretly admire that sort of personality. Maybe.
For my next reading, I just bought a book of such a kind that I used to read for self development and practical language skills. It would not be that exciting for the next few weeks, but let’s look forward to the next John Grisham novel that I would enjoy reading in the near future.
A Time to Kill!
Thank my colleagues who recommended me another great title by John Grisham, ‘A Time to Kill.’ I started it during the lunar new year holidays week, kind of a nice chance for me to fully concentrate on reading.
For the record, this is my first experience to read an eBook. On my iPad, in a portrait mode and with an optimal font size, the number of pages counts more than seven hundred pages. At first, it appeared to be a daunting task, but after a few hours of reading, I got used to reading on the mobile device. Actually, now I feel like to be a fast reader.
Anyway, I am almost finishing it, and I think I will write another post after I do finish it after a couple of days.
The Firm!
Finally, I finished ‘The Firm’ by John Grisham after I had started reading it about a week ago. I had attempted to have a decent reading time since I bought the book last year; I finally managed to do so. I enjoyed it so much and I vowed to try some of other best-selling titles of his. Particularly, I liked the main character, Mitch’s personality, the way he talks and argues. He is always confident. Even though it is highly unlikely that I would happen to work for a company run by mafia, I think I learned some lessons.
